仮定条件(Hypothetical Condition)
仮定条件(Hypothetical Condition)

仮定条件の「たら」は、前文の条件が満たされれば、後文の結果が成立します。
In hypothetical conditional sentences, “たら” indicates that when the condition in the first clause is met, the result in the second clause will occur.
Sentence Pattern: Verb (Ta-Form) + たら, result
Grammar Explanation: If ~

Ex.: 明日雨が降ったら、デパートへ行きません。
Rm.: Ashita ame ga futtara, depato e ikimasen.
En.: If it rains tomorrow, I won’t go to the department store.
Sentence Pattern: I-adjective (い) + かったら, result
Grammar Explanation: If ~

Ex.: 安かったら、買います。
Rm.: Yasukattara, kaimasu.
En.: If it’s cheap, I’ll buy it.
Sentence Pattern: Na-adjective (な) + だったら, result
Grammar Explanation: If ~

Ex.: 便利だったら、使います。
Rm.: Benri dattara, tsukaimasu.
En.: If it’s convenient, I’ll use it.
Sentence Pattern: Noun + だったら, result
Grammar Explanation: If ~

Ex.: 癌だったら、どうしよう。
Rm.: Gan dattara, do shiyou.
En.: What if I have cancer?

副詞「もし」を使うと、条件の仮定性がより強調されます。
The adverb “moshi” emphasizes that the condition is hypothetical.
Ex.: もし明日雨が降ったら、デパートへ行きません。
Rm.: Moshi ashita ame ga futtara, depato e ikimasen.
En.: If it rains tomorrow, I won’t go to the department store.
確定条件(Definite Condition)
確定条件(Definite Condition)
確定条件の「たら」は、前文の条件が成立することが確定しており、その条件を満たせば、後文の結果が成立します。
In definite conditional sentences, “たら” indicates that the condition in the first clause is certain to be met, and once it is, the result in the second clause will occur.
Sentence Pattern: Verb (Ta-Form) + たら, result
Grammar Explanation: When~

Ex.: 6時になったら、タイムカードを押して、帰宅します。
Rm.: Rokuji ni nattara, taimu kado o oshite, kitaku shimasu.
En.: When it gets to six o’clock, I’ll clock out and go home.

Ex.: 春になったら、桜が咲きます。
Rm.: Haru ni nattara, sakura ga sakimasu.
En.: When spring comes, the cherry blossoms will bloom.

「たら」の仮定表現では、必ず前文の条件が満たされたあとに、後文の結果が成立する順序でなければなりません。即ち、発生の時系列は、前文の条件が先に発生し、後文の結果がその後に発生します。
In “たら” conditional expressions, the condition in the first clause must always be met before the result in the second clause can occur. In other words, the first-clause condition occurs first, followed by the second-clause result.

Ex.: 日本へ留学したら、先に日本語を勉強したほうがいいですよ。(誤用)
Rm.: Nihon e ryuugaku shitara, saki ni nihongo o benkyou shita hou ga ii desu yo.(Goyou)
En.: If you study abroad in Japan, you should learn Japanese first. (Incorrect)

後文の内容が先に発生し、前文の内容が後で発生する場合は「なら」を使って表現します。
When the action or event in the second clause occurs before that in the first clause, “なら” is used instead.

Ex.: 日本へ留学するなら、先に日本語を勉強したほうがいいですよ。(正確)
Rm.: Nihon e ryuugaku suru nara, saki ni nihongo o benkyou shita hou ga ii desu yo.(Seikaku)
En.: If you’re going to study abroad in Japan, you should learn Japanese first. (Correct)

「たら」の条件文のあとに「意志」「希望」「勧誘」「依頼」等の表現が使えます。
The clause following a “たら” conditional can express volition, desire, invitation, or request.
意志(Volition)
Ex.: 12時になったら、お昼ご飯を食べます。
Rm.: Juuniji ni nattara, ohirugohan o tabemasu.
En.: When it gets to twelve o’clock, I’ll have lunch.
希望(Desire)
Ex.: 大きくなったら、お医者さんになりたいです。
Rm.: Ookiku nattara, oishasan ni naritai desu.
En.: When I grow up, I want to be a doctor.
勧誘(Invitation)
Ex.: 20歳になったら、いっしょに飲みに行きませんか。
Rm.: Hatachi ni nattara, issho ni nomi ni ikimasen ka.
En.: When you turn 20, would you like to go out for a drink together?
依頼(Request)
Ex.: 帰宅したら、お電話ください。
Rm.: Kitaku shitara, odenwa kudasai.
En.: When you get home, please give me a call.
