仮定条件(Hypothetical Condition)

「~なら」は、ある条件や前提を受けて、その場合にどうするかを述べるときに使います。
“~なら” is used to state what to do based on a certain condition or premise.
Sentence Pattern: Verb (Plain Form) + なら, result
Grammar Explanation: If ~ / If not ~

Ex.: 郵便局へ行くなら、ついでにこの手紙を出してきてくれますか。
Rm.: Yuubinkyoku e iku nara, tsuide ni kono tegami o dashite kite kuremasu ka.
En.: If you’re going to the post office, could you mail this letter for me while you’re there?

Ex.: 塾へ行かないなら、いい大学に入れません。
Rm.: Juku e ikanai nara, ii daigaku ni hairemasen.
En.: If you don’t go to cram school, you won’t be able to get into a good university.

Ex.: ワクチンを打ったなら、ちょっと安心ですね。
Rm.: Wakuchin o utta nara, chotto anshin desu ne.
En.: If you’ve been vaccinated, that’s a bit reassuring.

Ex.: 君と出会わなかったなら、僕は今でも独身だっただろう。
Rm.: Kimi to deawanakatta nara, boku wa ima demo dokushin datta darou.
En.: If I had never met you, I would probably still be single.

Ex.: 暑いなら、窓を開けたらどうですか。
Rm.: Atsui nara, mado o aketara dou desu ka.
En.: If you’re hot, why don’t you open the window?

Ex.: 高くないなら、買ってもいいですよ。
Rm.: Takakunai nara, katte mo ii desu yo.
En.: If it’s not expensive, you can buy it.

Ex.: 背が高かったなら、彼はイケメンだったかもしれません。
Rm.: Se ga takakatta nara, kare wa ikemen datta kamo shiremasen.
En.: If he had been tall, he might have been handsome.

Ex.: おもしろくなかったなら、もうやらなくてもいいですよ。
Rm.: Omoshirokunakatta nara, mou yaranakute mo ii desu yo.
En.: If you didn’t enjoy it, you don’t have to do it anymore.

Grammar Explanation: If ~ / If not ~

Ex.: この仕事が嫌なら、辞めるしかないですね。
Note:嫌だ→嫌
Rm.: Kono shigoto ga iya nara, yameru shika nai desu ne.
En.: If you don’t like this job, you’ll have no choice but to quit.

Ex.: 嫌じゃないなら、一度会ってみたらどうですか。
Rm.: Iya janai nara, ichido atte mitara dou desu ka.
En.: If you don’t mind, why don’t you meet her?

Ex.: お婆さんが元気だったなら、よかったです。
Rm.: Obaasan ga genki datta nara, yokatta desu.
En.: If your grandmother was doing well, that’s good to hear.

Ex.: 好きじゃなかったなら、どうして結婚したんですか。
Rm.: Suki janakatta nara, doushite kekkon shita n desu ka.
En.: If you didn’t love her, why did you marry her?

Grammar Explanation: If ~ / If not ~

Ex.: 学生なら、真面目に勉強すべきです。
Note:学生だ→学生
Rm.: Gakusei nara, majime ni benkyou subeki desu.
En.: If you’re a student, you should study hard.

Ex.: 関係者じゃないなら、入れません。
Rm.: Kankeisha janai nara, hairemasen.
En.: If you are not authorized personnel, you cannot enter.

Ex.: 彼が泥棒だったなら、きっと彼の妻も泥棒ですよ。
Rm.: Kare ga dorobou datta nara, kitto kare no tsuma mo dorobou desu yo.
En.: If he was a thief, his wife must be a thief, too.

Ex.: 鯨の骨じゃなかったなら、いったい何の骨なんですか。
Rm.: Kujira no hone janakatta nara, ittai nan no hone nan desu ka.
En.: If it wasn’t a whale bone, then what kind of bone was it?

副詞「もし」を加えると、条件の仮定性がより強調されます。
The adverb “moshi” emphasizes that the condition is hypothetical.
Ex.: もし塾へ行かないなら、いい大学に入れません。
Rm.: Moshi juku e ikanai nara, ii daigaku ni hairemasen.
En.: If you don’t go to cram school, you won’t be able to get into a good university.

「なら」は成立の時系列が「後文が先、前文が後」の文にも使えます。
この点が「と」「ば」「たら」と異なるところです。
“Nara” can also be used in sentences where the event in the second clause occurs before the event in the first clause.
This is one way “nara” differs from “to,” “ba,” and “tara.”


「なら」の条件文のあとに「意志」「希望」「勧誘」「依頼」等の表現が使えます。
The clause following a “なら” conditional can express volition, desire, invitation, or request.
意志(Volition)
Ex.: 時間があるなら、映画を見に行きます。
Rm.: Jikan ga aru nara, eiga o mi ni ikimasu.
En.: If I have time, I will go see a movie.
希望(Desire)
Ex.: 時間があるなら、映画を見に行きたいです。
Rm.: Jikan ga aru nara, eiga o mi ni ikitai desu.
En.: If I have time, I would like to go see a movie.
勧誘(Invitation)
Ex.: 時間があるなら、映画を見に行きませんか。
Rm.: Jikan ga aru nara, eiga o mi ni ikimasen ka.
En.: If you have time, would you like to go see a movie?”
依頼(Request)
Ex.: 時間があるなら、ちょっと手伝ってください。
Rm.: Jikan ga aru nara, chotto tetsudatte kudasai.
En.: If you have time, could you give me a hand?

Ex.: 山なら、やっぱり富士山です。
Rm.: Yama nara, yappari Fujisan desu.

Ex.: 温泉なら、別府温泉がいいですよ。
Rm.: Onsen nara, Beppu onsen ga ii desu yo.
En.: When it comes to hot springs, Beppu Onsen is a great choice.
