Japanese Grammar: How to Ask “Which one ～?” (どちらですか/どれですか)

Grammar Explanation: Which one ～? (Choose one of the two options)

Ex.: 日に本ほん製せいはどちら（どっち）ですか。

Rm.: Nihon-sei wa dochira (dotchi) desu ka.
En.: Which one is made in Japan?

Ex.: 左ひだりのです。

Rm.: Hidari no desu.
En.: The one on the left.

Ex.: 日に本ほんの国こっ旗きはどちら（どっち）ですか。

Rm.: Nihon no kokki wa dochira (dotchi) desu ka.
En.: Which one is the Japanese flag?

Ex.: 右みぎのです。

Rm.: Nihon-sei no kaban wa dore desu ka.

Rm.: Mannaka no desu.
En.: The one in the middle.

Ex.: 一いち番ばん人にん気きがあるアイスクリームはどれですか。

「どちら（どっち）」は選せん択たく肢しが2つふたつの場ば合あい、「どれ」は選せん択たく肢しが3つ以い上じょうある場ば合あいに使つかいます。

“どちら（どっち）” is used when there are two options, while “どれ” is used when there are three or more options.

「どっち」は少すこしくだけた言いい方かたで、家か族ぞく、友とも達だち、親したしい人ひととの会かい話わで使つかいます。「どちら」は「どっち」の丁てい寧ねいな言いい方かたで、目め上うえの人ひと、お客きゃく様さま、あまり親したしくない人ひとなどに使つかいます。

“どっち” is a more casual expression used in conversations with family, friends, and people you are close to.“どちら” is the more polite form of “どっち” and is used when speaking to superiors, customers, or people you are not very familiar with.
